The beta-2 sympathomimetic agent clenbuterol is a potent nutrient-repartitioning agent that has been used to promote growth in cattle and sheep by increasing muscle mass and decreasing fat mass with little change in total body weight. For this reason, clenbuterol is a frequently abused drug among athletes, especially females because it is not associated with the androgenic side effects of steroids. However, long-term treatment with high doses of beta-2-agonists has been shown to be toxic in several animal species, and short-term clenbuterol treatment has been shown to cause cardiac hypertrophy and sudden cardiac death in exercising rats.
The results from research on animals demonstrating the toxic effects of clenbuterol use are so clear, it is now considered unethical to evaluate long-term clenbuterol use in humans.
A recent study with horses has revealed that even low doses of clenbuterol resulted in significant detrimental effects in cardiac function and this was particularly evident after exercise. Supplying these animals with only 2.4-micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day was shown to adversely affected heart function. One microgram is one-thousandth of a gram, and athletes who use clenbuterol regularly exceed the dose used in this study.
Clenbuterol is shown to be toxic in high and low doses, so athletes should avoid this drug. Compounds such as CLA and Ephedra have similar nutrient-repartitioning effects as clenbuterol, but are much safer.
